Our 2020 show in French is Moli\u00e8re\u2019s Tartuffe<\/em>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Tartuffe, or The Impostor<\/em> is one of Moli\u00e8re’s greatest plays, which was first performed in 1664 at Versailles in a three-act version, now lost. Because of the opposition of influential Church groups, Moli\u00e8re was refused permission to put on his play for three years. A much revised version in five acts was shown only once in 1667. Finally, in 1669, Moli\u00e8re was able to make the play part of his repertoire at the Th\u00e9\u00e2tre du Palais-Royal<\/a> and so tell the story of the rise and fall of Tartuffe, a religious hypocrite, and his impact on the wealthy bourgeois family of Orgon. Since then, Tartuffe<\/em> has remained one of the most frequently staged plays by Moli\u00e8re at the Com\u00e9die -Fran\u00e7aise<\/a>. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

We are giving two performances, on Friday and Saturday, April 24 & 25, 2020, at 7:30 PM at the George Ignatieff Theatre on the downtown campus of the University of Toronto. Printed copies of the one-page summary in English as well as projected surtitles in English will be available at both shows.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
