Our 2017\u00a0show in French was one of\u00a0Moli\u00e8re\u2019s most celebrated comedies,\u00a0The Would-be Gentleman\u00a0<\/em>(\u201cLe Bourgeois gentilhomme\u201d<\/em>).<\/p>\n

The Would-be Gentleman<\/em>\u00a0is a five-act comedy-ballet\u00a0in prose, with wonderful music by royal composer Jean-Baptiste Lully<\/a>, that was first performed on October 14, 1670\u00a0for Louis XIV at the Ch\u00e2teau de Chambord<\/a>, and then from November 23, 1670\u00a0at the Th\u00e9\u00e2tre du Palais-Royal<\/a> in Paris where it enjoyed great success. It\u00a0successfully satirizes both the aspiring bourgeoisie and the decadent nobility.<\/p>\n

We gave two performances, on Friday and Saturday, April 21\u00a0& 22, 2017, at 8 PM at the George Ignatieff Theatre on the downtown campus of the University of Toronto. Printed copies of the one-page summary in English as well as projected surtitles in English were available at both shows. One could\u00a0purchase tickets on-line<\/a>, with seats to be assigned following a consultation with our box office staff beginning April 10, 2017; or one was able to contact our box office by telephone<\/a> weekdays 11 AM \u2013 5 PM starting April 10, 2017. Tickets, if any remained, were available at the door on the nights of the performances with payment by cash only.<\/p>\n
